Do you get a flu shot every year? If not, consider getting one this year. With COVID-19, it is unknown how bad this flu season will be, so Arizona Health Officials are urging Arizonians to get their shot.

The effect of the flu season with the pandemic is unknown but getting the flu vaccine will likely help not overwhelming the hospital system. Dr. Cara Christ, Arizona Department of Health Services director said “It’s not too early to get your flu vaccine and we are encouraging everyone who can get the flu immunization to get vaccinated this year. With COVID, we want to make sure people are taking every step that they can to prevent viral respiratory illness so that we can decrease hospitalizations and bad outcomes.”

For the 2019-2020 flu season, 39 to 56 million had caught the illness, 410,000 to 740,000 were hospitalized, and 24,000 to 62,000 died. Hospitals are already being overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients and with flu patients, this will cause more deaths.

Major pharmacy chains, Walgreens and CVS, are offering flu shots in their Arizona locations as of last week. Manufacturers are making millions of extra flu vaccines in expectation of it being in high demand this flu season.

People who can get a flu shot are anyone who is six months or older. Anyone who is considered to be a high risk should get their flu shot. Even if you are not high risk, get your flu shot to help the hospital systems and people who are high risk.
