There are a plethora of English classes at Verrado High School, but one AP class stands out: Mrs. Summer’s AP Language and Composition class. Not only does she possess the skills and passion for literature, but she also plays a key role in creating powerful student leaders that our school can rely on.

It comes as no surprise that being an educator to high school students is not an easy task. When asked what her inspiration was to become an English teacher, she stated:

“I love to analyze nonfiction and fiction texts. The nuances of the English language are fascinating enough to make me feel compelled to teach future generations the wonder that is the English language.”

As an educator, it is expected that there will be some difficulties that will arise in the classroom.“Some hardships that I come across during teaching include trying to help students understand the importance of rhetoric and staying on task, students tend to deviate from their work often so I find myself often trying to keep my students focused.”

When inquired about what she wishes for students to expect and gain from taking AP Lang, she responds:

“I want them to take away that reading and writing are important to every aspect of their academic life, and look at information objectively. Not only will it help in their academic careers, but it also can help them better understand the world they live in.”

Along with being an educator, Mrs. Summers runs Verrado High School’s student government. She leads our many school events, such as assemblies, after-school festivities, and currently, homecoming!

A person can only imagine the pressure that Stugo is under and may wonder if being a part of the club is even worth it. When questioned about the benefits of being in our student government, Mrs. Summers replied:

“Leadership skills are critically important to be hirable. Learning how to communicate with their peers and businesses gives them an advantage. Planning events for large numbers of people helps with time management and problem-solving on a level you don’t get in high school.”

When implored about any new fun projects people can expect from our student government, Mrs. Summers responded:

“We just did the Block party for Homecoming, decorating the Center on Main in colorful flowers, surfboards, and oceanic motifs to fit this year’s Hoco theme which is Teen Beach Movie. We are also currently planning for Make a Wish and the Unified Thanksgiving.”

In short, there is no question about the profound influence this teacher has on her students. She helps them strengthen and grow leadership skills, while also cultivating a sense of synergy and responsibility. Running the tight ship of teaching a college-level class to occasionally absent-minded high-schoolers while also running the student government can be no easy task, so we can’t help but appreciate all the work Mrs. Summers puts out for not only her students but the whole school itself!
