Breast Cancer Awareness Month at Verrado

Categories:

It’s officially Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Verrado’s sports teams and clubs are dedicating time to raising awareness for the cause!

With pink being the symbolizing color of Breast Cancer Awareness, Verrado’s Flag Football Team will be sporting pink shirts and pink socks for all home games this month. The strength and courage represented by the color combined with the strength and courage of the Lady Vipers will hopefully inspire those watching the games to donate to charities and aid in raising awareness for the cause.

Allison Rosperski, a junior and captain of the Lady Vipers, describes how it feels to sport the color while playing:

“Wearing pink definitely motivates me to give my all out on the football field. I think about how fortunate I am to play, and how many people don’t have the chances I get.”

She also hopes that wearing the colors will inspire others to take action and offer their support for the cause.

“I hope wearing pink during October inspires people to donate, or support people who are going through breast cancer,” she expresses. “And my condolences go to the people who are affected by it.”

At the varsity football game on October 17th, the theme for the Viper Pit was pink out, instead of the usual blackout. Replacing the school’s typical spirit color with pink represents the importance of the month and the school’s dedication to promoting awareness.

In addition, the NHS sold pink necklaces during the lunch periods for $1. The hope is that these necklaces will be worn to football games, ensuring a sea of pink in the stands!

Kyleigh Gwyn, a junior and NHS officer, hopes that the pinkout at the games will result in more attention to the cause.

“We hope the outcome of the pinkout games will be that everyone can understand the purpose of Breast Cancer Awareness,” she explains. “We also hope that people can see that supporting breast cancer will have a positive impact on either those who have it, or those who know people with breast cancer.”

Vipers, keep a lookout for different ways around campus where you can support Breast Cancer Awareness! Whether it’s donating money to charities, or just wearing pink to show support, anything is helpful in the cause to raise awareness for a disease that impacts many!
