Why You Should Join Digital Communication & Media at Verrado High
If you’re looking for a class that is exciting, hands-on, and filled with opportunities, then Digital Communication and Media (Digi-Com) is the place for you! As someone who has been in Digi-Com for a couple of years, I can tell you firsthand that this class is one of the best experiences you can have at Verrado High.
Digi-Com is so much more than just writing articles. It’s a gateway to digital photography, video production, podcasting, social media management, and web design. Whether you want to sharpen your skills in journalism, experiment with filmmaking, or learn how to create engaging digital content, this class gives you the freedom to explore your interests and develop real-world experience.

What Makes Digi-Com So Unique?

Unlike traditional classes, Digi-Com is a fast-paced and flexible course where students create content based on what excites them. If you’re passionate about sports, you can cover games and interview athletes. If you love entertainment, you can write reviews or produce a pop culture podcast. If you’re into photography or videography, you can learn to capture and edit stunning visuals for school events and publications.
Not to mention, Digi-Com students get to experience some of the most exciting opportunities on campus. We attend school events—for free!—to cover sports, theater productions, assemblies, and more. Instead of just being a spectator, you get a front-row seat to document the action and share it with the student body.

Incredible Field Trips & Real-World Experience

One of the best parts of Digi-Com is the chance to take our work beyond the classroom. We’ve traveled to California with StuGo to document their trip, visited ASU’s journalism school (completely free of charge), and covered major school events on-site. We also have opportunities to compete and earn recognition for our work at state and national levels.
And the best part? You can actually win money for your work! Digi-Com is partnered with SUN, an organization that gives student journalists a chance to publish their work and earn cash prizes. Verrado students have already won multiple times, and there’s plenty more to come.

Build Your Resume & Open Doors for Your Future

Digi-Com isn’t just fun—it’s a huge resume booster. You’ll learn how to write and edit professional articles, run a social media page, produce podcasts, and even design websites. These skills aren’t just useful in high school—they’re career skills that can help you land internships, scholarships, and even jobs. In fact, last year’s Editor in Chief earned a $1 million scholarship to the University of Texas thanks to the skills and experience gained in this class.

A Supportive and Creative Community

One of the biggest reasons I’ve stayed in Digi-Com is the incredible community. This isn’t just a class—it’s a team. We support each other, collaborate on projects, and make real friendships along the way. Our teacher, Mrs. Studts, is one of the most supportive educators at Verrado. She listens to our ideas, encourages creativity, and helps us turn our visions into reality.
