Recently, I was given the amazing opportunity to interview the one and only Freya Skye shortly after my article Freya Skye and Her Rise to Fame was published. I was able to learn more about her personal life, career, and interests, much of which fans are sure not to know yet.

Here is a documentation of the fascinating and incredible conversation with 15-year-old singer, songwriter, and actress Freya Skye.

The interview kicked off with Skye giving us a little bit of background on her life and career.

“I got singing lessons for my 9th birthday, and honestly, since I could speak until 9, music was my whole life. It wasn’t until COVID-19 when we were in lockdown that I really discovered acting, to be honest, and discovered my passion for it.

“I was always so music-driven and music-focused, and then I started taking acting classes just for a bit of fun, nothing too serious. And then I fell in love with it, and I started doing auditions, and self-tapes, and things like that, and you know I’m doing so many auditions and things like musical theater shows, commercials, video game voice-overs, honestly anything I could audition for I would.”

She further explains how her whole career started out in the acting field.

“I ended up auditioning for a show called Junior Eurovision, and I got the opportunity to represent the UK at Junior Eurovision. That was sort of the first step in my career, an opportunity to perform on the stage, which was always my dream to do, and also be seen by Disney…I think that’s really how it all began.

“I feel like it’s been so many years of building and loving it and improving and working on the craft, and since Junior Eurovision it seems like everything has been happening so fast since then, with Disney and Zombies and everything and my music.”

Since her Eurovision appearance, Freya Skye has released many songs, her newest being “Can’t Fake It”. When asked what her inspiration behind this song was, she said, “I think the inspiration behind the song, I remember coming into the session and I kind of knew I wanted an upbeat fun tempo song because I hadn’t really toyed with that kind of genre.”

She elaborates on her inspiration, also stating, “I remember going in and discussing how I feel that day. I remember that I was frustrated I couldn’t get over a situation, and I kept on speaking to my family and friends about the same person, and it was like I was a broken record; it was getting so repetitive. And so I wanted to write a song from my perspective of speaking to them and kind of not apologizing, but being like, ‘Look, I wanna get over this, and if I could I would’…

“It all kind of wrote itself from there. Lots of the things I was saying in that conversation ended up becoming lyrics. So the opening lyric of the song ‘I’m not even sad about it, maybe just bitter’ was something I had said in that conversation. I think it perfectly sums up the meaning of the whole song, just the confusion of how you’re feeling and why you’re feeling that way and conquer over it. I think the song wrote itself, and I think that’s how you know you’ve got a good song when it flows.”

Skye also discussed her opinions on how she thinks her music has evolved over the years.

“There were so many worlds I was exploring and figuring out where I belonged the most in those kinds of genres. And I think coming into this year where I’m writing lots of new music, I feel like I’m being a lot more creatively involved in all the decisions when it comes to my music. I think I’m starting to build a cohesive body of work, which hopefully can become an album. But especially with ‘Can’t Fake It’ and even though my discography is still very versatile.

“I do think it all reflects me and feels the same in the sense of you can tell it’s the same person, you can tell it’s the same person writing, the same feelings, just without a different melody and melodically different and the lyrics are differents and stuff so I think it feels cohesive in my newest songs…”

She also tells us how she has taken inspiration from multiple artists, assisting her in songwriting and figuring out what styles she likes the most.

“I think it’s constantly changing who I really look up to and take inspiration from, but someone who its been for a while is gracie abrams, i love the way she writes her songs i think its very conversational, and it all flows so beautifully together as if its just a chat between her and a friend…

“I really hope that in future releases my music can take a hint of that where it feels like I’m just having a conversation with you and ranting and offloading to you as a friend rather than singing something that’s super cryptic and maybe sometimes confusing to understand, so i think her conversational style of writing is something that I really admire and something I take inspiration from for sure.”

I then moved the conversation to her exciting new appearance in the soon-to-be-released movie Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires, in which she plays the role of Nova.

“I think a big thing I loved so much is just the community that there is on set. It’s something that I definitely craved and was really eager to experience and feel a part of, just having a really tight-knit, close family feeling on set. Doing a long three-month project like Zombies, I feel that I really found that.

“…we were all in a new place that we hadn’t been to before, so it was really nice to have each other. We all just relied on each other so much and grew so close within there, and obviously, the actual filming of the movie part was so much fun, getting to really learn about my character and find her. The clothing and the fashion of it are really exciting, and the stunts. I really enjoyed the stunts.”

It was clear that Freya had a great time filming Zombies, but I also was curious to see if there were any challenges she faced during shooting.

“The stunt training was a lot. I think out of a lot of the characters in the movie, my character had the most intense, mostly fighting training.

“…I’d do a couple hours pretty much every day, kicking my legs and jumping and punching and making noises and backwards rolling and forwards. It was all of these super intense moves that made it look super graceful and easy when you watch it, but I was sore every day…definitely intense, but it was so rewarding to get to watch the scenes back of me doing these fight sequences, knowing all the preparation that went into it.”

Since there have been three previous movies in the Zombies franchise, I wanted to know how exactly her character compared to other characters both in the fourth movie and the ones that came before it.

“She definitely brings something new to the franchise, a character we haven’t seen before…I think she is such a fighter, and I think she is really eager, too. Just seeing her character development and the way her walls really break down throughout the movie is really fun to see… I think she just brings a whole new side to the Zombies franchise.”

After these questions, Freya shared some brand new news: she, among other cast members of both Zombies and Descendants, is going to be touring the world shortly!

“I think something that makes the Zombies and Descendants movies so fun to watch in my opinion is just how immersive they feel, and you feel so involved…I think the tour is an opportunity for people to feel even more immersed and connected to these characters that they already know and love.

“…I think it will feel very nostalgic for people who grew up watching the movies and doing throwback to songs like “Rotten to the Core” and “Someday” from the first movies of both, but also really fun and fresh and new to people who may be hearing the Zombies 4 soundtrack pretty recently, since the movie will be pretty fresh.”

They are kicking off the tour in San Diego on July 17th, with the tour coming to a close in early September.

Because of this news, I wanted to learn more about how she got this role, which ultimately led her to have such a thrilling opportunity.

The audition process was definitely intense. I remember getting the call saying, ‘we have a script for Zombies 4, would you be interested in taping for the role of Nova’ and I was like 100 percent, get me involved.

“…I did a self-tape and then I did a call with the producers and the director where I read the scenes again, and at that stage, it’s all kind of fresh and you’re kind of like, ‘fingers crossed, but put it to the back of my mind.’ You never know what’s going to happen or what they’re looking for.

“…I didn’t hear anything for about two weeks, and i remember thinking ‘well, that’s a shame’ and I started to grieve the role and you know try to get ready and understand that every no is closer to a yes.

“But the day I had been really upset about thinking I hadn’t booked it, I got a call, and I found out that I did. So that was a crazy day. It’s really nice…then a couple weeks later, I flew out to New Zealand, so it all happened really fast. It was a really nice time to learn more about the character and just really sit with Nova and understand who she is, what her similarities are, what’s similar to me and her, and what’s different. I also grew really close to my costar Malachi throughout that whole process, so very grateful.”

Expanding on Freya’s previous works and jobs, she tells us, “Going back to doing self-tapes and auditions, I did book a couple small parts. I did voiceover work for a video game called Final Fantasy, which was so fun and was so great for experience too.

“I also went out and did an appearance on Season 9 of The Next Step in Canada. Going out to do that was really exciting; it was my first time traveling for a project and getting to be on a set like that. The whole cast of the next step were so lovely and they’ve been out there for a couple months now, so I think seeing them all being so tight and so close, that was really like their second home, made me feel so excited to shoot Zombies 4, knowing that I would have something like that, I would have a little community, so it was a lot of fun.”

Of course, hearing about all of the tiring work Skye has done over the past years has to make one wonder: how does she balance the acting with the singing?

“I think sometimes it can be difficult just trying to keep the two minds separate and knowing that ‘hey, today I’m on set and I’m acting, in Nova’s mindset’ and ‘today I’m doing music, press, etc.’, so I think keeping the two separate is very difficult because they can definitely mix together sometimes.

I feel like on an acting set, though, it’s just the whole day you’re on set in a costume so I think it can be easy to remove yourself not just from the music things, but also remove myself from Freya, and really just immerse myself in the project I’m working on, then as soon as the makeup and hair, the wig, the costume, comes off, I’m like ‘let me write a song’ or something like that. So I think having the costume really transforming into the character can help me separate the two.”
I was curious if all of this in her career has given her any challenges and how she has been able to overcome them.

Freya responded, “I think a big challenge for me throughout my career, and even still to this day, is still trying to accept and understand the rejection of it all. I think doing auditions and stuff, there are so many no’s, and I think this is something so many people say.

“In most positions you go to, I’ve been turned away and they’re like ‘no no no, too tall, too everything’, so I think trying to really understand and come to terms to the fact that it’s not personal and it’s not about you, it’s just that they have a vision for their project and you don’t align with that vision. Just really trying to understand that, and knowing that with every door that closes, another one opens, and that every single no is another step closer to a yes.

“I think overcoming that was a lot of work…the more it happened, the more it helped me, and I think talking to people in the industry was really helpful, people i met at auditions and hearing about their stories of their auditions and getting rejected, and then we can both share about both our personal stories. I think it’s just perseverance and not giving up.”

I proceeded to ask her if anything in her career so far has been the most surreal/surprising, specifically anything significant that truly changed things for her.

“…it’s so hard to pinpoint it to just one moment because there’s been so many highlights, but just shooting all of Zombies 4 was such a career highlight for me, my first ever movie, and Zombies 4 is just a franchise I adore and love and inspired me when i was younger.

“…I think just that whole shooting process was really really fun. I think even though it’s everyday and it’s so much hard work, it is so much fun and enjoyable and special, and everything you see on camera, there’s hardly any green screen, so much of its real, so I do feel like every time I went to step onto set I had to pinch myself because it feels so surreal that you’re actually there.

“I think that’s been such a highlight in my career. I’m looking forward to this year, there’s so many amazing things to look forward to: the premiere of Zombies 4, and the tour, and lots more music, and things like that. I’m just so happy the way everything’s been going so far and I’m so grateful for the trajectory so far, I’m just loving it!”

To wrap things up, I asked her a just-for-fun question (which Disney will hopefully see!) What’s her dream role to play in a movie or show?

“I would love to play Rapunzel. I don’t know that it would ever happen, just putting it out there, I would love to play Rapunzel one day. She’s my favorite Disney princess, Tangled is my favorite Disney movie… feel like that would be a dream role of mine…we’ll see what the future’s got in store, but that’s the dream!”

Unfortunately, after that last question, we didn’t have any more time. However, it was such a privilege to get to learn more about Freya Skye and to be able to share it with fans alike. Getting to know Skye was so much fun, and I think she’s a great person with big talent, a kind heart, and a genuine love for what she does.

Check out Freya Skye, and look out for her in Zombies 4!
