The fastest-growing sport as of late, Flag Football, is making its waves everywhere. Mainly, girls’ leagues are the center of attention for expansion into colleges, clubs, and even more opportunities.
Three years ago, Verrado had just added Flag Football for girls. Since then, the girl’s program has been developing to what it is today, a team that reached quarterfinals only on third go around. Also, they were Region Champions in 5A Deset West. The program even has the Lady Junior Vipers now, just like the football team flag has practices and games to develop Verrado’s future flag football athletes.
It’s not just Verrado; now schools all around the US are giving flag football as a sport they offer at schools. As of now, fourteen states have flag football at a varsity level. But with the rate of popularity, the sport is expected to grow at a rapid rate.
Now, colleges are getting in on the action, too. NAIA college flag football is widespread around the country, and higher divisions are starting to play it as well. For example, D1 schools like ASU and GCU have made club teams to develop their athletes. So, all colleges will be offering scholarships soon for athletes in flag.
High-league travel teams for the sport are now in development, as well as for high school-age students. Flag football is played by athletes all around the world. Even now, in the Olympics, starting in the Summer of 2028, it will debut as a sport.
Since flag football is a new sport to most, it has much to grow in the years to come. But the future is bright for the girls joining the sport, and now it can be pursued to higher levels than seen before.
