In the state of Arizona, climate change and sustainability have become an increasingly prominent issue. Many different schools across the country are exploring different ways to reduce their carbon footprint and operational costs. One possible solution to this is to add covered parking with solar panels on top.
So, what exactly is solar covered parking? These are also commonly referred to as carports or canopies, with installed solar panels on top of the parking spaces. These structures not only provide shade and protection for vehicles, but also generate clean, renewable electricity from the sun.
Unlike traditional solar panels, these include carports. They make use of parking spaces, allowing for two different problems to be solved in one go.
Verrado High school is located in one of the most sunny states: Arizona. This state can get up to 300 sunny days every year, making it a perfect candidate for solar energy generation. With this much sunlight, solar panels could produce a significant amount of energy all year round. This would significantly reduce Verrado High School’s dependency on nonrenewable energy resources.
Yes, solar panels with covered parking is expensive, but the overall amount of money these two things save over time would allow the school and district to gradually get a return on their investment. Many schools have adopted this type of system, and have reported thousands of dollars annually in energy savings. Over time these savings can be put into different educational programs, facility improvements, and extracurricular activities. In addition, the school could take advantage of state and federal incentives, making this project seem much more affordable.
These structures could send a message to the community of Verrado’s educational mission about environmental responsibility. For example, the science and environmental studies curriculum could potentially offer students a real world example of using renewable energy in action.
Parking in Arizona’s heat for a long period of time is often a miserable experience for those getting in their cars at the end of the day. Cars that are in open lots can often reach dangerously high temperatures. This makes it uncomfortable and possibly even unsafe for staff, visitors, and students. Solar parking provides both shade and protection, significantly improving the overall campus life of everyone. The canopies would also reduce the need for air conditioning in the vehicles, indirectly lowering fuel costs for everyone.
By becoming one of the first high schools in the area to adopt solar panel covered parking, Verrado High School could potentially be in the position to become a leader in sustainability. This big step could possibly inspire other high schools both in and out of the district to do the same. This would be a perfect opportunity to demonstrate what forward thinking, environmental leadership looks like on the local level.
Schools all throughout the United States are already seeing the returns on their investment. For example, the Tempe Union High School District, which is also located in Arizona, has been installing solar panel covered parking across multiple different campuses; now they are saving millions in electricity costs, at the same time significantly decreasing their carbon footprint. Tempe Union High School District proves that it is possible to do this.
Solar panel covered parking is a win-win for Verrado High School. It promotes sustainability, enhances comfort, saves money, and provides different educational opportunities for students, in a time where environmental responsibility is more important than ever.
It’s more than a smart decision to adopt this new technology; it’s the right one. Verrado High School has always been known for looking towards the future, and installing solar parking canopies is the next step towards a cleaner, greener, and more efficient campus.

Adding the Solar panels on school parking sounds like a good idea because the students wouldn’t have to worry about the sun hitting there cars and making the cars hot inside and also the school can save a lot of money because of the parking and school can make it better for the students car’s and if the school adds solar on the parking I think the school would look more better.

As a student attending Verrado Highschool I think that solar parking is a really good idea. They can provide so many things and can end being very useful. For example they can provide shade for the people maybe parking under them so there cars don’t get extremely hot at the end of the day, as a student that drives to school going back to your car in the middle of the day when its over 100 degrees is substandard. The solar powered parking is also very useful for the school budgets. Over all I agree with the solar powered parking I think that they would last long term, and end up being a huge money investment, and can help the school improve.

I agree with this! As a student who parks here at Verrado my car gets extremely hot on the inside even with a window shade. Verrado could save millions of dollars if they decided to do this. Not only are they benefiting saving money, but it’s also making the school look better for wanting to make the environment better. There were so many petitions and projects last year of this exact problem. I really hope Verrado does decide to help us all out and save money! This shows dedication to our school, not only that but the leadership that is shown through the decisions that are made! Way to go Verrado!

After reading this article, I noticed that I liked the way that they wrote the article to persuade the reader into also believing that solar parking for verrado would be beneficial to verrado, the students, and the enviorment. I also liked how they answered problems or questions people may have, an example of this is when the article explained how solar parking would be expensive, but over time they would save more money from building dollar parking. Another thing I liked about this article is how they used an example of schools like Tempe union high school already having solar parking and showing the benefits they gained from having solar parking.

That fact they came up with solar parking was a really good idea for all schools. It helps saves a lot of money as mentioned in paragraph 5. Living in Arizona is super dry and hot and it low-key sucks that Verrado doesn’t have solar parking Evan with the money they got. This story I think can be used to be showed to the school on why we need or should get solar parking for this campus. It also says how it can be a safety thing because of hot of inside a car can get.

Having solar parking can actually be really helpful, especially during these times for how hot it is. Solar parking can become really reliable. It’s never said but solar parking can also reduce the % of parking maintenance especially due to snow, dirt, rain, etc. Providing shade, particularly in large parking lots, can help lower surface temperatures, reducing the “urban heat island” effect and potentially lowering the cooling needs of surrounding buildings. Solar parking needs to be recognized more because of all the benefits it carries within our world and because of how good of a investment solar parking can be.

As a Student of Verrado High School, that drives and uses the school parking, I think it would be great to have Solar Panels over parking spaces. It would provide another utility to the space used for the spots, and give the cars that park extra shade, so when school ends our cars aren’t so hot. Although the panel installations are pricey, the use of green energy and the money saved over time is huge. This is a great Article, it is interesting to learn about how the schools in Arizona are already implementing this.

I like how to talk about climate change and know the issue of Arizona weather. And a park in Arizona can heat up the cars it’s nice to have covered the park a lot.

Having solar parking really does sound like a good idea and investment I the long run. Verrado can save money and make it better for the drivers. Last year we had a project to help make Verrado better and one main thing was solar parking there are a lot of people even kids who think this can be something good for the school. If we get solar parking I think it can make our school look better like we have money and if you think about it if we get solar marking were making free money that really does make our school have more money. More money means better things for our school. I think its so cool how one simple yet expensive change can make such a difference.

As a student currently attending and parking at Verrado High School I find this suggestion helpful. In fact for my team’s ELA final project with Mrs. Savage we decided to suggest Solar parking to the board members before we changed it to just normal parking shade. I find high temperatures especially inside the car to be horrible and miserable especially after a long day at school. I found that 300 sunny days here at Arizona is actually crazy and I would have never guessed that. I also believe that in the long term, Solar Shades will be a huge investment with our amount of sun and the amount of money we probably use to have electricity at our school.

I agree adding solar parking into Verrado would be a excellent idea! Not only for the students getting shade on their car so it’s not boiling hot after school but also helps the school save money to be put into things that will help or improve students learning and overall time at Verrado. I agree that the investment would be overall great and beneficial. Being one of if not the first school to do this will definitely increase not only popularity for Verrado but also will show leadership in our school. I support this idea all the way and would love this change!
