Laufey just recently released her third studio album, titled A Matter of Time, on August 22, 2025. Hype for this album was already established when Laufey released her single, “Silver Lining” a few months prior.
This album was an immediate success among fans, with the new releases being just as amazing as her previous albums.
I loved this album a lot, it fits in so well with Laufey’s style, making it a perfect addition to her discography. The theme is very magical and blue, matching the aesthetic of her previous album Bewitched: Goddess Edition.
On the theme of magic, the music and song titles have a very Disney fairytale feel to them. Titles like “Snow White” and “Castle in Hollywood” all had a very magical feeling to them, shown with their instrumentals and vocals.
The musical-like vocals felt very grand and impactful in many tracks. A very recognizable factor she uses a lot in this album is a very dramatic buildup to the bridge.
My personal favorite song that utilizes this is “Forget-Me-Not”. Although the bridge in this song is very similar to the chorus, the buildup to it makes it feel very satisfying, with the instruments becoming more intense to match her voice.
Laufey’s bridges are a very iconic part of her song writing. “Too Little, Too Late” had a very distinct bridge. I enjoyed how the bridge is very different from the initial tone set up in the beginning of the song. It almost serves as an increase in emotion, with this song focusing on the regret she feels for how a past relationship ended.
The timid introduction perfectly contrasted the broken feeling conveyed at the end of the song. Small things like this really show Laufey’s attention to detail in her song writing and composing.
It’s really clear that Laufey’s singing technique just keeps improving with every new release. Songs like “Silver Lining” and her live renditions of many tracks show just how much she’s improved vocally in comparison to her earlier music.
The style of this album felt like a mix of previous albums Everything I Know About Love and Bewitched. A lot of the songs were more in her old style of less heavy instrumentals, with more of a soothing jazz influence.
A good example of this is “Clockwork” and “Lover Girl”. “Clockwork” had the bubbly love song feeling shown a lot in songs featured on her first album. “Lover Girl” had a similar feel, with fans comparing the beat and instrumental choices to “From The Start”, a hit single released to tease her second album.
I really liked how so many tracks had a very heavy traditional jazz influence. I felt like Bewitched took a different approach, with the music being very theatrical, with more of a bossa nova influence. She kept this style intact through this new album.
“Mr. Eclectic” felt like something you’d hear at an old timey jazz bar, but she still manages to give all of her music a fresh feeling. “Carousel” also had a similar melody to her past works such as “Bewitched” and “While You Were Sleeping”.
A Matter of Time also felt very experimental, but in the best way possible. I was surprised by “Sabatoge”, with it being a lot angrier and gritty than her usual style. The hectic instruments fit well into the theme of the song, really showing the frustration conveyed.
Overall, I really enjoyed A Matter of Time. It was a really amazing album from Laufey that highlighted all of her best skills and talents. Her work as a musician and songwriting has never disappointed and I’m very excited to see what she has in store next.
