The Verrado Vipers opened their 2025 football season on Thursday, Aug. 28, with a 44-23 loss against the Horizon Huskies. While the scoreboard wasn’t in their favor, the team is already focused on regrouping and building momentum for the season ahead.
New head coach Davis, in his first year leading the Vipers, emphasized before the season that this year would be about strategy and growth. Even with the tough start, his message remains the same — Verrado football is in the process of building something stronger.
Players echoed that determination following the opener. Right guard Liam Gilday said the team is committed to moving forward.“After losing last week, we all got together and talked about our game plan moving forward so we can have another winning season like we did last year,” Gilday said.
Running back Christian Valdovinos added that adversity can motivate the team.“A game like this can bring a team closer,” Valdovinos said. “After a loss, we want to work harder and be the best we can for each other. It shows how much we want to win.”
The Vipers’ offense showed several bright spots despite the loss. Senior quarterback Malachi Wilt led the offense with 221 total yards, including 197 through the air and 24 on the ground. His top target was junior wide receiver Carter Bliss, who recorded 97 receiving yards.
Other key contributors included senior Logan Waldeck with 42 all-purpose yards, senior Immanuel Perry with 26, sophomore Chase Valdez with 15, and junior Eli Mock with 12. As a team, Verrado tallied 43 rushing yards, 197 passing yards, and 191 receiving yards.
Though Horizon’s defense proved difficult to crack, the Vipers are looking at the opener as a learning experience. With a long season ahead, the team believes these early challenges will help prepare them for tougher competition down the road.
Losses are never easy, but players and coaches are determined to improve week by week. The Vipers are relying on their bond as teammates, their new coach’s strategy, and the continued support of fans to push for more wins this season. The season may have started with a setback, but for Verrado, it’s just the beginning. The Vipers are ready to fight for every yard, every play, and every victory that lies ahead.
