To kick off the spooky season, theatre and choir are collabing this fall for the school’s annual haunted house. Verrado High’s haunted house is put together by students who take part in choir. This year is a little different, with choir and theater joining forces to put together and carry out this event.
The haunted house will take place October 25th at the school’s very own E wing. It is a walk-through haunted house that goes through student designed rooms. Each room is designed to look like a scene from different iconic horror movies from the past decades.
There are going to be 12 different sections. Themes include Scream, Saw, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Choir and theatre are working together to create this event, with many of the students even partaking in being scare actors. One of these participants is Savannah Bowey. When asked what the conjoined clubs are doing to prepare for this event, she stated, “Both theatre and choir students are collaborating with each other to share their ideas and come up with different themed sections.”
When asked if the event planning is going smoothly, she replied, “With the two groups working together, things are able to be done more efficiently and more collaboratively, causing little to no discourse among the students involved.”
Students are being given a lot of creative freedom when it comes to decorating their assigned rooms. Josie Owens, a dedicated member and vice president of the show choir along with choir president Jaeda Bryd, is in charge of decorating a Friday the 13th themed room.
Josie stated, “I am really enjoying the process. I really like the creative freedom that we have when making our rooms.”
The new collaboration is very beneficial for both parties. While this event has usually been held by choir, the extra help from theatre students has made the process more efficient and opened opportunities for new creative ideas. Savannah added, “it gives students the chance to work with each other and build their teamwork skills.”
The event is being run by the theatre teacher, Mrs. Farrington and show choir teacher, Mrs. Spiegel. They take their role in this very seriously, constantly supporting the students and even providing them with constructive criticism and encouragement. In order for this event to thrive, cooperation between both parties is necessary.
Despite being seen over by teachers, the event is completely student run. Savannah expanded by saying, “students are in charge of everything to do with the haunted house, be it props, decorations, costumes, tickets, and more.”
Destinee Runion, another involved student on this event stated, “I heard from a previous year that the haunted house was a very exciting event, I do not think their reactions will differ from last year and instead improve. Especially for those students who take joy in seeing horror films.”
Students are making sure that each room is going to be able to run smoothly, while still being immersive and scary. The annual haunted house brings together students involved, and creates a fun experience for attendees.
Make sure to support the arts by attending Verrado High’s haunted house! Supporting the students involved is beneficial for all parties involved.
