WARNING: This article contains spoilers.
The Prime Video original series “The Summer I Turned Pretty” continues, based on the bestselling series by Jenny Han. The first episode, “Love Lost”, ends with Jeremiah telling Belly that Conrad has gone missing. This isn’t picked up immediately in the second episode but instead starts with a flashback between Belly and Conrad. Today, that and more will be unpacked in this honest review of season two episode two, “Love Scene”.
The flashback shows Belly during Christmas sneaking out of her house in the middle of the night to drive to Cousins with Conrad. At this point, they are still together and nothing has fallen apart between the two of them just yet. They drive around town looking at Christmas lights and sharing their hopes and dreams.
The scene ends and it’s back to Jeremiah and Belly, who meet to look for Conrad together upon Belly’s insistence. They head to Conrad’s dorm where they meet his roommate. He informs them that Conrad has left to go to Cousins, so they head that way.
It is worrying to Jeremiah because he fears it may have something to do with his father or his mother’s death.
Laurel, Belly and Steven’s mom leaves to go on a book tour for her new memoir on her best friend Susannah, who recently died from cancer. This leaves Steven home alone as he thinks Belly is staying over at her best friend and his crush, Taylor. However, Steven runs into Taylor at a bookstore and she ends up telling him she’s been covering for Belly, and that she’s really on her way to Cousins with Jeremiah.
Meanwhile, Jeremiah and Belly are in an awkward silent drive when the car tire pops. This was the last straw for Jeremiah and he became furious with Belly. She apologizes for an event that happened at Susannah’s funeral but it’s not known what has occurred yet until it is shown as a flashback in a later episode.
Most of all, Jeremiah is hurt by Belly cheating on him with Conrad last summer. Belly tries to make things better and apologizes once again.
Finally, they make it to Cousins and find Conrad there. Jeremiah and Conrad immediately start arguing until Conrad notices Belly and is shocked to see her there.
Those are the facts, but here are the thoughts.
Because of all of the somewhat obnoxious love drama between Conrad, Jeremiah, and Belly, fans of the show have started turning more of their attention to what’s going on between Steven and Taylor. Their potential relationship has pulled at the heartstrings of many viewers for their chemistry is intriguing and undeniable.
Those who still do care about whether Belly will choose Conrad or Jeremiah feel very strongly about the subject. Last week’s review included interviews with Team Jeremiah, but here’s a look into those who are rooting for Conrad.
Many fans of Conrad agree on one thing: Jeremiah is immature.
According to Star, “Jeremiah threw fits all the time because he couldn’t have Belly. He ignored her because Conrad was with her. Belly may have made some questionable choices but Jeremiah acts like a baby regardless”.
In addition, when asked the same question, Anonymous said, “Jeremiah talked trash about his brother when Belly told him she would choose Conrad because she truly loved him but once again he made her feel like her feelings were invalid”.
Although these are both fair points, it can also be argued that Conrad is immature. In this episode, he did not take it well when Belly showed up to Cousins. More of that is explored as the series continues.
There are plenty of other examples as to why people dislike Conrad or Jeremiah, but in this specific episode, the overall opinion from viewers is that the two brothers act very childish.
Another debatable thought about this episode is whether or not Belly even deserves to be with Jeremiah or Conrad. Belly is a walking red flag that has gone back and forth between them for years. One could argue that she walks all over them and takes advantage of the two because she knows they will always want her no matter what. If this weren’t true, at least one of them would have left her by now. She may not even realize the effect her actions have had on Conrad and Jeremiah. She has broken both of their hearts multiple times and still keeps coming back because she just can’t make a choice.
In summary, “Love Scene” continues to pique the interest of viewers, whether they have read the books or not. It truly is a CAPTIVATING series. Stand by for next week’s review, covering the third episode: “Love Sick”.
