When Ms. Wadding initially entered the coaching landscape at Verrado High School, it was soccer that ignited her enthusiasm. However, as she embraced motherhood, her coaching journey transformed as well. “The late games and evenings prompted me to explore other sports that might be more suitable for me and my family,” she stated. The transition occurred in 2016, when Verrado launched its inaugural badminton program. Taking advantage of the moment, Wadding took action — and hasn’t regretted it since. Currently, the program is flourishing, and her dedication to coaching is more robust than ever.
Although badminton wasn’t her initial intention, it has transformed into a fundamental part of her goal to enhance girls’ sports. “Badminton has inspired female athletes to explore new opportunities and achieve success in the sport,” Wadding noted. She concentrates on supporting young women in developing not only as athletes but also as assured individuals. “I consistently express to my athletes that I have faith in them and their potential achievements.” That conviction has contributed to raising the badminton program to a higher standard of competitiveness and community pride.
With her leadership, the team has gained a reputation for quality; however, misunderstandings about the sport continue to exist. “Many misunderstandings exist regarding badminton and the level of competitiveness required to succeed,” Wadding stated. The team’s achievements are impressive, including five sectional championships and a state championship in 2023. For Wadding, the answer is straightforward — experience it firsthand. “I invite all to attend our games and observe the athletic skill required to compete at an elite level.”.
Wadding is equally enthusiastic about encouraging additional students to participate in the program, even if they are not part of the team. “We consistently seek assistance,” she remarked. Whether it’s leading the group, capturing images during games, or just being there to support, there’s a place for all. Students can participate in badminton during RTI to learn the sport and engage. “I urge students to confront our players — it’s an excellent method to gauge the true skill level of our athletes.”.
This season, the squad has aimed for great achievements. “Our aim this season is to win our division and progress to the state team,” Wadding stated with assurance. And she understands they cannot achieve it by themselves. The encouragement from the Viper community is crucial for inspiring the athletes and fostering the culture. “The matches are free — we’d be thrilled to see the seats filled with students and staff supporting us.”.
Beyond the victories and championships, what Wadding is creating is something more enduring: a cornerstone for girls’ sports to gain recognition, respect, and appreciation. Her efforts in the weight room and on the court are creating new opportunities for female athletes to value themselves — and their abilities — more seriously. Verrado has consistently showcased incredible female athletes. “They should have greater opportunities,” she stressed.
Under her guidance, badminton has evolved into more than merely a sport at Verrado — it’s a venue for development, aspiration, and togetherness. “The athletes have transformed coaching into an activity that I genuinely love,” Wadding stated. Her bond with students, developed through PE classes and mentorship, has contributed to creating not just a team, but a movement.
In a school brimming with talent and promise, Ms. Wadding is demonstrating that with proper guidance, girls’ sports can excel, unite, and triumph — one impactful swing at a time.
