After a successful season last year, the Verrado Vipers Girls Flag Football team isn’t just looking to repeat history—they’re aiming to make it. With the sport gaining national attention and even a spot in the upcoming Olympic Games, Verrado is embracing the moment by expanding its program and spotlighting the rising talent on campus.
Talented athletes such as Simone Pfitzer, Greenlee Henderson, and Taehanie Scott have all committed to colleges.
Allison Rospierski, one of the team’s starters, adds: “The girls came off the last season with a winning record, making it to the second round of playoffs. Many of the girls from last year graduated, leaving room for new leaders to step in and develop even better than before.”
“This year, we’re really looking forward to the continued growth of the Flag Football program,” said Coach Terry Barnes, who leads the squad. “It’s exciting to watch our players progress so quickly in both their skills and understanding of the game.”
That growth is clear: for the first time, Verrado is adding a Junior Varsity team to the mix, giving even more student-athletes the opportunity to play, learn, and compete.
And these players are putting in the work. From spring and summer workouts to joining a 7-on-7 league hosted at Verrado, the dedication runs deep. “We’ve got quite a few athletes who’ve shown a next-level commitment already,” Barnes noted. “Their drive to improve and represent Verrado is impressive.”
The team’s goals this year go beyond just wins and losses. Yes, they want to compete at a higher level and chase victories, but there’s also a focus on building a strong, positive culture—one that connects athletics and academics. “We want our players to grow not just as athletes, but as students and leaders,” said Barnes.
The rise of flag football—especially for girls—makes this season even more important. “It’s a new and quickly growing sport, not just in high school, but also in college,” said Barnes. “And with it being added to the Olympics, now is the time to help prepare our athletes for those opportunities.”
Verrado students and fans can help fuel that momentum in one simple way: show up. “Come cheer us on at our home games!” Barnes encouraged. “Your support means everything to the players and helps grow the sport right here in our community.”
Whether you’re a football fan, a fellow student, or just want to be part of something big, this is the season to get behind Verrado Flag Football. The future is bright—and it’s just getting started.
