The lights are back on, the pads are popping, and football season has returned to VHS. For the freshman Vipers, the excitement of a new year comes with an uphill challenge—seven of their 10 games will be played on the road. That’s why, more than ever, community support will be key. Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets through GoFan on the VHS site and travel to cheer on the next generation of varsity talent, starting with the September 2nd opener against West Point.
Despite the tough schedule, Head Coach Pippins sees nothing but potential. He describes his squad as “lightning-fast on offense and suffocating on defense,” a combination that has already turned heads. More than just athletic ability, though, Pippins points to discipline, pride, and commitment as the qualities setting this group apart.
Training is no small part of that equation. The freshmen push through cardio sessions on the track every Tuesday and Thursday, balance those with weight room workouts on alternating days, and stay active during their fifth-hour class. That consistency, Pippins believes, builds not only physical strength but also trust.
“Our core values are communication, effort, energy, accountability, and integrity,” he said. “Effective communication is foundational—it helps athletes interact better with teammates, coaches, and the community. And accountability is what makes a good team great. Integrity ties it all together.”
For Pippins, those values extend far beyond the field. He makes a point of leading by example, encouraging players to represent themselves and their school with pride whether they’re in the classroom, on the practice field, or at community events. Academic success is non-negotiable, and he and his staff celebrate when athletes turn grades around as much as they celebrate touchdowns.
“A strong culture has to live within the program,” Pippins explained. “It’s not just words on a wall—it’s hours of work, day after day, month after month, because everyone truly wants to succeed. That’s what drives us forward.”
That drive includes helping student-athletes keep perspective. While football can be transformative, Pippins encourages his players to experience everything high school offers, from sports to academic clubs to social organizations. “Sports are just a piece of who they are,” he said. “But it can shape them for bigger and better things if they stay involved.”
Still, when it comes to representing VHS, the message is clear. “If you want to wear that V on your chest, you need to do it with pride,” Pippins tells his team—a reminder that they represent not only themselves but their school and community every time they step on the field.
Looking ahead, Pippins says this year’s freshman team has the tools to make noise. “They’re packed with talent and have a deep understanding of the game. We’ll be challenged, especially on the road, but with support from our fans, I know this team will rise to the occasion.”
With speed, discipline, and pride fueling their season, the VHS freshmen are ready for the test. All that’s left is for the Viper faithful to fill the stands—home and away—and watch the future of VHS football take shape.
