The first dance concert of the year was a huge success! The dance department has improved on so much such as rhythm, technique, coordination, etc. This year’s dance concert theme was 90’s-2000’s. There was a lot of emotion, it was upbeat and exciting. With the choreography and the dancers, you can tell there was a story being told with each piece.
One of the dances starting strong was Clumsy choreographed by Kayliegh Stockman. The dance was a jazz piece, very sassy, very much girly. All of the girls were in sync with each other and sharp with their movements. Clumsy shows the feminine side of girlhood and how they express themselves. Overall, it was one of everyone’s favorites. Moving onto a duet “Die With a Smile” by Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga, starring two talented seniors, Macey Noel and Alyssa Hernandez. The meaning of their dance, the way they moved and connected to the music, was absolutely breathtaking. They had outstanding technique.
Macey and Alyssa’s dancing together complimented each other well. They showed good emotion and perfect turns, it was very pretty. The meaning of the dance was their friendship. Barbie was so unique! It had a little bit of theatre mixed with hip hop and was super fun to watch, especially with the two kens, it was a perfect way to incorporate the two guys into the dance. They made a Barbie box for the girl who played the Barbie. The dancers matched each other’s energy just enough.
Next, Dance III performed a contemporary piece to the song “Bad Religion” by Frank Ocean. The song has a really deep meaning to it, it’s about loving someone who doesn’t or “can’t” love you back, loving someone who doesn’t feel the same is like a “bad religion”. The dance was super emotional and dramatic, it was really alluring. The deep red lighting against the black leotards added more of a scenery. Most dancers and the audience talked about how it was one of their top favorites.
The most hype dance in the concert, Tukah Taka performed by Dance I A, was cultural. It was an African style kind of dance with a little bit of belly dancing and salsa. It was about communities coming together and having fun. Everyone’s costumes had their own kind of style. At some point in their dance, they had these pink belly dancing scarf skirts wrapped around their bottoms. Dance 1 really outdid themselves! Dance I B did a contemporary mixed with modern dance. Their dance was to the song “Good Days” instrumental by SZA. The piece was beautiful with their blue dresses and the blue ombre lighting reflecting on them. It felt like the ocean was on the stage, watching mermaids move through the waves. Everything was elegant and the dance captured the mood of the song. The choreography was beautifully done and I could tell a lot of thought was put into it. In conclusion, all of the dances were different styles and techniques in a beautifully connected dance recital.
