The theater program is preparing for their upcoming fall musical Mean Girls and students couldn’t be more excited. Mean Girls The Musical is a musical based on the hit movie Mean Girls, which was released in 2004 and has been iconic since its first release.
The musical follows Kady as she experiences high school for the first time after moving from Africa. She must navigate the many cliques in high school to find where she belongs. Mean Girls takes a hilarious look at the highs and lows of being in high school.
According to Christina Farrington, Verrado theatre teacher and the musical’s director, Verrado Theatre chose Mean Girls The Musical because “it’s a very popular musical, and the students like it. It also has very catchy music and we think the community would like it.”
Auditions were on August 29th. For auditions, students had to pick a monologue and song that they would then perform for the judges. During auditions, every student gets a score and that score is used to determine who will play what role. This process helped narrow down the options for who is most fit to play each character.
“Only 30 people were selected, and we used a rubric to decide who got in,” says Mrs. Farrington
Rehearsals started on September 5th. Since then, the cast, crew, and directors have been working hard to put on an amazing show.
For a show to be successful everyone has to work together and all put in equal effort. There are many different aspects of a good production, from marketing to set building every small detail matters. While the actors are working on perfecting their singing and stage presence tech is making sure everything behind the scenes works out.
Tech, while rarely in the spotlight, is an important part of any production. Tech helps behind the scenes to make sure productions go as smoothly as possible, putting in hard work to make sure that the actors have the resources they need to succeed.
According to Ab Gines, who plays Janice “The best thing about playing Janis is that I get to have a BUILT IN BEST FRIEND!! Our Damien, Jaden Lassiter, is amazing and my favorite part of rehearsals is all the shenanigans he and I get to do during rehearsal.”
Mean Girls the Musical will be on December 7th, 8th, and 9th, and everyone involved would be ecstatic if the whole community could come out and support the Verrado Theatre Program.
