Singer/songwriter Chappell Roan has taken the world by storm. Roan is a queer pop artist who has quickly risen into the spotlight and onto the stage, earning millions of fans and selling out at venues all over the country.
Starting out as just a teenager, she would post videos on YouTube of her singing. This caught the attention of Atlantic Records and she was soon signed to them, which was just the beginning of her journey to fame.
Throughout the next few years, she wrote songs about the things that inspired her and what she felt as a queer person as both an artist and a human being in general. For example, after going to her first gay bar, she wrote “Pink Pony Club”, a song about a girl who moves away to live her life however she wants. She felt impacted by this bar, being surrounded by people she shared things in common with and could actually be who she really was.
Despite how great of a song “Pink Pony Club” is, Atlantic Records dropped Roan, but that didn’t stop her.
She continued to work hard, and kept opening for bigger artists such as Declan McKenna and Olivia Rodrigo. She started working with Dan Nigro, who had been the producer of Rodrigo’s album “Sour”, and together they created a number of hit singles, such as “Femininominon”.
After releasing her album “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess”, she increasingly gained recognition. Once she landed as an opener for Olivia Rodrigo’s “GUTS” tour, there was no stopping her.
And then came her biggest breakthrough. Her single “Good Luck, Babe!” was released on April 5, and has been playing nonstop on the radio, TikTok, Instagram, and of course all music streaming platforms.
Chappell Roan’s breathtaking performances at Coachella put her over the top, as she is currently on her “Midwest Princess Tour”.
Roan has attracted so many fans for a large number of reasons, and not just because her songs are catchy. Her songs are also relatable for many queer fans, making listening to her music a whole different experience. Roan’s tracks give people a sense of community.
Her concerts are extraordinary; she themes her performances (“goth grunge and glitter”, “slumber party kissin”, etc.) each with their own special dress code, making attending her shows a completely new experience rather than just a classic concert one would expect.
In addition, Chappell celebrates drag immensely. Drag queens open for her shows, and she often donates money to a Black, trans-led nonprofit called For the Gworls.
She is widely known for her unique makeup, quirky style, and overall just being a queer pop icon.
Chappell Roan is truly an inspiration because of her caring heart, different aesthetic and music type, heartbreakingly relatable songs, and more. She gives people a reason to listen, and gives queer youth a home and a community.
She really is everyone’s favorite artist’s favorite artist!
