During the 2025 school year, Verrado High School and the rest of the Agua Fria Union High School District introduced a new academic initiative for incoming freshmen known as Pathways. The program allows students to select a focused area of study, such as engineering, literature, or history, which then helps shape their class schedules throughout all four years of high school. The goal is to give students a clearer vision of their interests and potential career paths before graduation.
At a recent RSVP event held at Desert Edge High School, a district representative highlighted early results from the Pathways program, pointing to several notable improvements. According to this representative, “The number of failing grades among freshmen has dropped by more than 50 percent.” compared to years before the program was implemented, signaling increased engagement and academic success.
While the district has also seen a 15 percent increase in suspensions over the past two years, although some may see this as a bad thing, this can also suggest that stricter enforcement of behavior policies have been put in place and the district is no longer looking past problems in student conduct that may have not been pointed out in previous years. The district has placed a stronger emphasis on addressing bullying with more school events and time with counselors maintaining a positive learning environment and a place to speak your mind instead of keeping bullying a secret.
Additional benefits of the Pathways program have emerged beyond academics. More students are receiving responses from colleges they are interested in attending, and requests for class schedule changes have declined to almost none. District leaders believe this indicates that students are more satisfied with their course selections and less likely to feel disengaged or bored. After just two years, the Pathways initiative is making a measurable impact, offering students a more personalized and purposeful high school experience.
