An interview with English teacher Armando Teran offered a deeper look at the American Dream and how it is understood today. His responses showed that the idea is more defined than it first seems, and how it continues to change and develop over time.
According to Teran, “I’d say the American Dream is the idea that if you work hard, you can build a stable, successful life and maybe even do better than your parents.” This definition connects to many of the texts studied in class, where individuals strive for success and a better future. The idea of improving one’s life through effort has long been a central part of the American Dream.
However, The American Dream is not the same for everyone. Teran explained, “No, it’s not the same for everyone, because people come from different backgrounds and have different opportunities and challenges.” This idea is reflected in ‘I Am Not Proof of the American Dream’ by Tara Westover, one of the stories students read as a class. where success is shown to be unequal and shaped by personal circumstances.
The meaning of the American Dream has also changed over time. As Mr. Teran stated, “over time, the American Dream has changed from just having a steady job and home to something more uncertain and harder to reach.” This shift connects to’ How Rocks Ballads Brought My Father’s American Dream To Life’ by Hua Hsu, (another book students read), where the dream is more personal and influenced by individual experiences.
Mr .Teran also pointed out the challenges people face. “Things like poverty, lack of education, discrimination, and a tough economy can make it harder to achieve.” These obstacles show that hard work alone does not always guarantee success.
Finally, he explained, “Yes, it looks different for each generation because what counts as ‘success’ and the opportunities available keep changing.” Overall, the American Dream continues to evolve and looks different for each generation, shaped by changing opportunities, challenges, and definitions of success.
