Starting with the One and Only our Verrado Vipers, The Verrado High School mascot is the Viper, but there is no specific public information explaining the origin or reasoning behind the choice. It is a common practice for high schools to select mascots that are strong or have a local connection, and “Viper” likely reflects a desire for a powerful or intimidating school identity but to my guess Vipers, including venomous snakes like the rattlesnake, are native to Arizona. The newest high school in Goodyear, which opened in August 2025, is Goodyear High School, and its mascot is the Maverick. The choice of the Maverick mascot was a tribute to the city’s history and to a prominent local organizationThe high school is built on the grounds of the former Phoenix Trotting Park, a horse racing track that operated in the 1960s. The Mavericks mascot is a reference to the horse racing history of the site so that could be a reason that its a horse. The name of the school itself, Goodyear High School, was chosen to thank voters who approved the bond measure that funded its construction.
