As soon as November hits, one thing becomes almost impossible to escape: Christmas-themed drinks. Every year, restaurants and cafes roll out their holiday menus, and suddenly it feels like everyone is walking around with a cup with a snowflake or snowman design on it.
Starbucks, Dutch Bros, Dunkin’ Donuts, and even small local businesses release festive drinks that instantly take over social media and become a huge part of the holiday season, especially for teens. What used to just be a simple peppermint mocha has turned into somewhat of a holiday tradition.
These drinks are so popular because of the vibe they create. Holiday drinks feel cozier and even nostalgic for many people. Ordering a seasonal drink is one of the first signs that the holidays are officially here. Flavors like gingerbread, peppermint, and sugar cookies make the winter season feel more festive, even if in Arizona, it’s still quite warm outside.
Social media also fuels the obsession. Every time a holiday menu drops, TikTok fills with reviews, recipes, and people trying to get their hands on limited-edition flavors. People post pictures of their cups, taste-testing videos, and even create custom drinks by mixing new menu items. The hype for these drinks has turned into a trend, not just a beverage, with people who don’t usually drink coffee wanting to try a sip.
Holiday drinks are also designed to taste like dessert. Seasonal menus are full of sugar flavors that feel like a treat, rather than a cup of coffee for fuel. For those with busy schedules, especially near finals season, ordering a holiday drink can feel like a reward and a moment of joy in the middle of stress.
Former Starbucks worker Jenny Rodriguez states, “People go crazy for these drinks; it’s basically a madhouse when the winter menu drops.”
She continued, “I understand why people love these drinks so much, they’re really good, and the fact you can only get them for a short period of time really gets people interested, in a way it builds up the hype.”
Another appeal is the limited time aspect. These drinks only come around once a year, which creates pressure to try them before they disappear. People want to get their favorites while they can, and also want to taste new items before the end of the season. This sense of urgency makes the drinks feel special, almost like a tradition.
For Gen-Z, getting a holiday drink becomes a social activity. Friends meet up after school to grab a cup of coffee while driving around looking at Christmas lights and hanging out. These drinks tie themselves to memories, becoming a part of many people’s winter experience.
These seasonal drinks give people a way to celebrate, unwind, enjoy the holidays, and just sip on a festive drink.
