The Roaring Twenties was a time when North American society was rapidly changing across many areas: society, Art, and culture. And a self-discovery and liberation with the U.S. not being touched in the war, therefore, the ‘ Roaring’ Prohibition was in place, and so North America was a very wise and clean-cut place to be. This era left people eager to enjoy life. Jazz music filled the streets of Harlem and speakeasies, giving rhythm to a generation that was ready to break away from the strict traditions of the past. Flappers danced with carefree abandon, bobbing their hair and wearing shorter skirts, shocking the older generation but symbolizing a new era of freedom for women
There were a lot of things that came to the Roaring Twenties. One major thing was that mass production Art and literature reflected the times, with writers like F. Scott Fitzgerald capturing the excitement. Cities grew faster than ever before, with tall skyscrapers and cars giving people the freedom to explore beyond their neighborhoods. Meanwhile, prohibition created a culture: although alcohol was banned, underground clubs and illegal bars were booming, giving rise to legendary figures like Al Capone. People found ways to challenge restrictions and redefine what it meant to live fully in a modern world. Radio Stations connected friends across states, while silent movies and Broadway shows entertained millions, creating a shared culture that felt revolutionary.
The Viper Times had the opportunity to personally interview Mr.Lovett about some questions about the Roaring Twenties and his opinion on this Era. Here are some questions we asked him,’ What impact did the stock market crash have on everyday life’ The impact that the stock market played a major role in everyday life during the 20s, despite not everybody being able to participate in it. As stocks began to rise, the companies they belonged to were seeing money flowing in at an unprecedented rate because all that money people invested made those investors richer and richer no matter HOW much they invested. Imagine going to the casino knowing that you’re going to win 100% of the time. With all that expendable income they began buying these hot new products such as cars, radios, phonographs, everything they could imagine!! However, the “value” that these companies had were all speculation and not a reflection of their true value. So when it came time to audit the “Actual value” of these companies, they found out that they’re not worth $300 a share; rather, it was actually $30 which leads to the Great Depression where everybody lost their ‘overspeculated’ portfolios.‘ The next question was: Fashion during the 20s was quite different. Do you think we learned from them as fashion today and lastly’ here was his response. I don’t think we necessarily took their fashion (although I know the flapper bob is still prevalent in some spaces), I think we took the symbolism that came with their fashion. Flappers weren’t flappers because they looked like one, they were flappers because it was more of a mindset than what they looked like. The mindset being a challenge to traditional societal norms like showing a little bit of ankle or wearing loose clothes rather than suffocating corsets that women were ‘expected’ to wear.’ Do you think the roaring twenties had a big impact on how the world is now ?” In Mr. Lovett ‘s words ‘The Roaring 20s had a” HUGE” impact on how the world is viewed now, ESPECIALLY today. It’s called the roaring 20s for a reason: it was ROARING with changes in society with groups breaking the traditional social norms as we see with the Harlem Renaissance and flappers notably. We see a boom in technology, though 20s products were things we take today for granted like quality of life improvements including radios, cars, washing machines, vacuum cleaners, etc. whereas today we see major improvements in technology in a variety of ways in AI, computer tech, and even modern warfare. Today, essential households are kinda just a given whereas I think it’s safe to say that people today indulge more in their wants/desires as it’s SOO easy to. With our tiktok algorithms showing us the same product 500 times and finally buying it out of spite or waiting for the new pokemon, video game, or graphics card drops, consuming what we WANT and having the mindset of “yeah i do deserve this” can be traced all the way back to this roaring time period.
The Roaring Twenties were not just about wealth and fun and creation, it was an experimentation and only the beginning for the future and creating new cultural landscapes. From the booming streets of New York to the jazz-filled clubs of Chicago, society was learning to balance tradition and innovation, responsibility and pleasure. In many ways, the decade was a celebration of life itself , unpredictable, and unapologetically alive. It left a legacy that would influence generations, reminding people that periods of rapid change are both challenging and exhilarating.
