At Verrado High School, a new initiative is helping make prom night more inclusive and accessible for everyone: the Prom Closet. Designed to ensure that every student has the opportunity to attend prom feeling confident and celebrated, the Prom Closet provides free or low-cost formal wear to students who may not otherwise be able to afford it on Saturday/Sunday, March 14-15 and 21-22 during hours 9 a.m-2 p.m. v
The idea behind the Prom Closet is simple but powerful: no student should miss out on prom because of financial barriers. For many families, the cost of prom can quickly add up. Between dresses or suits, shoes, accessories, tickets, hair, and transportation, the expenses can become overwhelming. The Prom Closet helps ease that burden by offering a wide variety of gently used and new formal wear items, that students gowns and stylish suits to dress shirts, ties, shoes, and accessories. The collection is designed to meet different styles, sizes, and preferences.
What makes the Prom Closet especially meaningful is the sense of community behind it. The initiative has been supported by donations from students, families, local businesses, and staff members who want to make a difference. Many of the items available have been donated by alumni or upperclassmen who wanted to “pay it forward” after their own prom experiences.
Student volunteers and staff members play a major role in organizing and running the event. In the weeks leading up to the Prom Closet dates, volunteers sort donations by size and style, check items for quality, and set up the space to feel like a real boutique. On the event days, volunteers assist students with finding the right fit, offering styling advice, and making sure everyone feels comfortable and supported. The goal is to create an experience that feels special and empowering.
Beyond providing clothing, the Prom Closet represents something even bigger: a commitment to equity and belonging. Prom is often described as one of the most memorable nights of high school. By removing financial obstacles, Verrado High School is sending a clear message that every student deserves to participate fully in school traditions. When students feel included and celebrated, it strengthens school spirit and builds a more connected campus community.
The prom closet opens on Saturday and Sunday, March 14-15 and March 21-22, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., giving students opportunities to attend. Those interested are encouraged to stop early for the best selection. Donations of formal wear in good condition are also welcome leading up to the event.
With compassion, collaboration, and creativity, the Prom Closet is turning generosity into confidence. Thanks to this initiative, more students will walk into prom night, feeling proud, prepared, and ready to make lasting memories.
