On Wednesday, March 26th, Verrado hosted its first home meet of the season. There were four other schools in attendance that night: Copper Canyon, Willow Canyon, Estrella Foothills and Paradise Honors. No medals were handed out, as it was a JV meet, but all teams performed well.
The meet and its events started around 3:30pm, a few hours after testing for the Junior class on the AZSci. Set-up for the meet went smoothly, with the Verrado team dividing the labor between the hurdles, concessions, and the team camp in the stands. Both field events and track events went off at the same time, with javelin throwing in the practice field near the fieldhouse, long jump on the infield and the track events all at the same time.
The first track event was the 4 by 800, a relay event where the runners make two laps around the track before passing the baton to their teammate at the starting line.
The other big events for the track were the 400, 100 and 200 meter dash, the 1600 and the 4 by 400 at the very end of the night. The meet went by smoothly thanks to the coaches help in organizing everything, and the Verrado team helping with setting up hurdles, putting them away, and cleaning up the stands so the meet could end at a reasonable time.
On Friday the 27th, there will be an away meet for only freshmen and sophomores on the team, and there will be another home meet planned for next week on Thursday, and that will also be the Senior Night meet for the track team as well. It will also round out the last of the JV meets for the current season, and all further meets will be varsity only events for the rest of the season.
